Facebook: an overview

The website mashable.com released two days ago an infographic called “Facebook by the numbers”. Infographics are a new way to promote a whole bunch of facts and data that would be extremely boring to read. In fact, infographics are the new bullet points. They are a great way to make data shinier and attractive (I have a great example of it but it’s in French. My English teacher will be really upset if you click here )

This article is great to have a clear overview of Facebook’s health at this time: the most famous social network doesn’t seem to be challenged too hard by its competitor Google Plus, with its 400 000 000 users logging into Facebook every day, its 2 000 000 000 posts liked and commented every day

The Dickhead Song

I found this video accompanying a brilliant article from my classmate Nathalie: her blog is Diving into an ordinary imaginary and she’s also a great singer .

Another BRICS in the Wall

South Africa is the most recent member of BRICS (April 14th, 2011; China)

Okay, this title is outrageously lame, but wait, there’s more:

*/\* DISCLAIMER */\*

According to the French Agency of Foreign Investments, the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and Southafrica) have increased their investments in french businesses of 10% each year since 2003. So this post is going to be really nice to you, BRICS guys. We love you. Invest. Doesn’t matter global warming, child labour, the fact that these countries are obviously going to outstand us within a few months.

*/\* END OF DISCLAIMER */\*

This article from Le Monde (in french) shows quite accurately how these countries, which form sort of an alter-G5, are currently asked to help the Eurozone to get out of its monetary crisis.

However, this is not yet the time for a Marshall Plan coming from Russia and China (my grandfather would not believe it is an actual possibility for Europe). But for how much time? I kind of screwed up the positive angle i drew on top of this post, let’s say it’s Frenchman Melancholia (from its greek origin, black bile).

Slim Amamou: from cyber-activist to minister

Tunisian Pirate party's logo

I will talk today about Slim Amamou, former tunisian minister of Youth and Sports. This guy was an informatician, married, with one child, but he could’nt stand the censorship in his country, Tunisia. The country was ruled by Ben Ali, who exerced a severe block of several websites.

Slim became an activist for the Pirate Party, supporting the net neutrality, and the copyleft softwares.

He became a web leader when he was arrested during a protest on January 2011: he activitated at this moment his phone’s GPS, so that everybody would track him until the Ministry of Interior.

After the Jasmine Revolution, he became Deputy to the Minister of Youth and Sports, and gained fame by tweeting his first ministry council.

Learn more about how he became minister , and how he had to resign. Of course, you can follow him on Twitter or read his blog

25 years after: the Restaurants du Coeur

I just made an audio podcast about the French NGO “Les Restaurants du coeur”. 25 years after the death of its founder, there’s more and more meals to serve!

Internet: the creepy side

Why is this girl crying? And this dad gone mad?

Continuing in the “dangers of internet” topic, let me tell you about a girl, 11 years old. Her name, on the Internet of course, is Jessi Slaughter. It’s the terrible demonstration of the worst that may happen if you don’t know how to deal with your children when they are in front of a computer. The story has been summed up on the website http://knowyourmeme.com , just click here .

Google +, Facebook : war on privacy

This is a battle for money, honeyOn June 28th, 2011, Google launched its new social network, Google +. The goal was clearly to compete with Facebook, the biggest social network on Earth (620 million of users, half of them connected every day).

One of the biggest concerns about Facebook has been privacy: newspapers are full of stories of unlucky workers betrayed by their online presence (Tip: DO NOT pretend to be sick at home when one of your friends has an iPhone and is able to take and upload pictures of you dancing in your Willy Wonka’s disguise).

The arrival of Google+ came with an apparent preoccupation of privacy: the whole system of this new social network was oriented by the dissociation of information you choose to display to your “friends”, with an organization by “circles”. You can select, every time you make an action, who you want to share it with.

A few days ago, Facebook has released some new settings that are quite similar to what Google+ offers.

This good infography, taken from the unofficial website http://www.allfacebook.com , will show you with efficiency the main issues of privacy between the two main occidental social networks.
